A large scale installation has the power to change an environment to make it’s audience feel all kinds of different emotions; awe, contentment, happiness, uneasiness. Not to mention the shear beauty of something so huge, tangible and, in most cases, temporary. A statement art piece at an event can bring a whole new dimension to a space or creative concept. It can elevate the attendees experience to a new level, not to mention the Instagrammability!
In recent years it’s become more and more common to see these installations at events. Or maybe it just seems that way because they tend to go viral on social media pretty quick! Here are some of the standouts from around the world to feast your eyes on.
Coachella
Well it is called a Music and Arts Festival. And it sets the bar each year for art at music festivals. Classic Coachella means the signature Balloon Chains by Robert Bose. Colourful chill zones are a necessity in the middle of the Californian desert and can be the backdrop for more wonderful art. These kind of installations stimulate and inspire attendees. Walking from your tent to the main stage has become that much better.
Burning Man
There is something about Burning Man which is completely other worldly. That’s mainly due to the moonscape-esque environment stretching as far as the eye can see. The huge art pieces which emerge at Black Rock City during the week long festivities are some of the most outlandish, innovative and interactive you’ll see at any festival. Most will only last for the duration of the festival – as the pieces are burnt on the last night.
Cave Urban at Woodford, Dark Mofo and Art and About
Cave Urban is a Sydney based grass roots design collaborative bringing their beautiful bamboo pieces to festivals around Australia. They use local organic, recycled and recyclable materials where possible and encourage community interaction in the building and dismantling of the work.
Fashion Show Art
Dior
A distinctly feminine aesthetic defines Dior, and what says femininity more than 300,000 delphinium stems planted over a giant man made mountain? This was one of the most talked about runways of a recent Paris fashion week. And it was largely due to this incredible entryway. Dior consistently tops itself with their beautiful runway installations, using colour, construction and different materials to bring something new to this ever changing industry.
Chanel
From the debut of the first ready-to-wear collection in 1978, Chanel can always be counted on for one of the most major runway spectacles of the season. Typically held in the heart of Paris at the Grand Palais, Chanel’s couture runway shows are always surprising, using the huge space and turning the idea of a standard runway on its head with incredible theme driven artworks and centerpieces to match the beautiful clothing.
Light Projections – White Night Melbourne
Just last weekend we saw the fourth annual White Night Melbourne take the city by storm once again turning the city on its head in a ‘dusk ‘til dawn celebration of culture and creativity’. White Night displays a huge array of installation, lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music, dance and interactive events across Melbourne until the sunrise brings you back to reality.
Light Projections – Vivid Sydney
Vivid Live is one of Sydney’s biggest events, and growing larger every year. It’s a simple idea really: light projections onto iconic Sydney buildings, and it draws a huge crowd from all over the world to enjoy the nighttime spectacular each year. Their 2016 program is to announced very soon and is sure to be bright indeed.
