Transitioning from a career in analytical chemistry to event management, Karyn’s unique path showcases her ability to blend analytical skills with creative event planning.
In this interview, Karyn shares her experiences, insights, and the lessons she’s learned along the way, offering valuable advice for anyone considering a career in event management.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you’re currently doing.
I’m Karyn, and I love assisting others and going out of my way to brighten people’s day. My love for events began during my time at university when my team and I planned and managed dance battle events as part of our dance society. Seeing everyone having fun and creating lasting memories was incredibly rewarding.
I started my career as an admin assistant at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, having previously worked in food and beverage operations for over five years. I then took on my first full-time role as an Entertainment and Event Coordinator at The Star Sydney, where I managed the bookings and operations of entertainment for events on the property.
A year later, I was promoted to Events Executive, managing the planning and operations of both client and internal events, such as gala dinners, cocktail parties, conferences, and seasonal property activations. I also had the opportunity to work on the Logie Awards on the property and had the pleasure of seeing many stars on the red carpet during operations.
Now, I am part of the events team at Pier One Sydney Harbour Hotel, where I recently joined as their Events Executive.
Within two years, I progressed from being an admin assistant to an events executive, planning events at a popular wedding venue with one of the best views of Sydney Harbour.
What compelled you to take the Diploma at College of Event Management?
Having previously completed a four-year degree in university and being in my mid-20s, I knew I didn’t want to spend another 2-3 years studying another degree that focused mostly on theory with very few practical components. What I loved about the Diploma at CoEM was its emphasis on practical experience, allowing me to actively apply my learning to real event situations. Additionally, the course duration was just one year, which effectively fast-tracked my career in events.
The most valuable thing you learnt through the Diploma?
Events are all about the guest journey and experience. Truly understanding the purpose of the event can make a gathering transformative and meaningful. Additionally, engaging all five senses when planning an event can elevate the experience to a whole new level.
Who were you before doing the Diploma, and who are you now?
Before starting the diploma, I worked as an analytical chemist for three years, analyzing environmental samples in a laboratory, often for long hours. The lack of direct contact with clients made it difficult for me to see the value and impact of my work. Especially after COVID, I realised how precious time is and how important it is to treasure moments and experiences. This led me to quit my job in the science field and pursue a career in events, aligning with my personal values and providing the rewarding feeling of seeing my hard work come to life.

Starting my career over was challenging, and I often struggled with self-doubt as I tried to establish myself in the events industry. However, the Diploma at CoEM helped me overcome my impostor syndrome and rebuilt my confidence, better preparing me to tackle any event challenge. Within two years, I progressed from being an admin assistant for one of the largest ticketed events in the southern hemisphere to an events executive, planning events at a popular wedding venue with one of the best views of Sydney Harbour.
Proudest achievement in events to date?
I have many achievements that I’m proud of, but I’ll describe my most recent one. One of the most coveted events held on the property was the annual NYE VIP Gala Dinner for 600 invite-only guests. The night was filled with roving entertainment, a three-course menu carefully curated by the Chef de Cuisine, and a three-act show on stage. Given the complexity of the event, it was traditionally produced by the event manager in collaboration with the Premium Services and Partnerships teams over a three-month period.
When my manager unexpectedly went on leave due to illness, the event was handed to me to piece together in just six weeks. At that point, the only thing that had been arranged was the concept given to our suppliers and chefs to develop the styling, entertainment program, and menu. Additionally, I had many large-scale events to manage for my external clients, putting my time management skills to the test.
I did what I do best: I analysed previous NYE events to identify what worked well and what needed improvement, leaned on my team for advice and support, and actively communicated each plan with everyone involved to ensure we were on track. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, the event day finally arrived. I found myself sitting in the middle of the room during rehearsals, admiring the blue and gold drapes, the delicate floral centerpieces, and the visual and lighting effects, which were in perfect sync with the beautiful choreography and aerialist performance on stage. At that moment, I felt an immense sense of accomplishment and had a good feeling that our VIP guests would have an amazing NYE.
When I returned to work after the New Year break, I received feedback from the guests that it had been one of the best NYE VIP Gala Dinners they had attended in a very long time.
